Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder |

I think that recently I have a better understanding of the phrase: "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder".

During my dark moments, when I look at the world, it's filled with potential future pains:
Every human being I love might cause me pain, by leaving or by dying.
Every living creature I love might cause me pain, by becoming lost or by dying.

In the darker moments, I look at people in the street and they seem like potential graves: people are walking with a tombstone hovering above their heads.

Following the work I did with my NLP therapist, I realize this is my responsibility, how I look at the world and what do I see in it. I can see death and pain and sorrow and suffering, because they are there. And I can see life and beauty and solace and love, because they are there too.

I think most of us don't see death and pain and sorrow and suffering because we don't want to. We repress it or deny it. An acquaintance of mine, Andriana, wrote in her blog "The Black Ribbon" that "death is transparent". I couldn't agree more. Death is constantly around us, but we don't see it. It's transparent to us - until it punches us in a way which leaves no room for dispute or doubt. I think part of the difficulty of dealing with an unexpected death is this shock, when something transparent instantly becomes a cement wall we crush against, in a speed which went up from zero to 350 kph in a split second.

I think the challenge is to go back to seeing life and beauty and solace and love after and in spite of and although I already know there is so much death and pain and sorrow and suffering in this world, and that the potential for future death and pain and sorrow and suffering is infinite and ceaseless.

Therefore, beauty lies with the ability of the beholder to choose to see it. And the challenge is to see it even after you know and have experienced it and you've tasted and seen and heard in an unmistakable manner, that death is present, and not transparent at all, not even for a minute. And to re-choose to see beauty - without repressing or denying the knowledge that there are death, and life.

August 25th 2013 update:
This morning in the street I saw a kid walking with a white, fluffy puppy held in his arms, and he was cuddling it. The first thought that crossed my mind was "Poor kid, He's gonna be so heartbroken when something happens to this puppy: when he runs away, or gets lost, or gets run over by a car, or dies", and I forced myself to switch this thought with another one: "Maybe this kid will grow up to be a better person because he'll grow up with a little dog whom he'll love and be loved by".
